The Right Choice - ORBexpress Middleware Used for Harris Corporation's Falcon III Family of SDRs

OIS’s high-performance, small-footprint CORBA ORB used in Harris's Falcon III® handheld, manpack, vehicular and fixed-site radios

TYSON'S CORNER, VA/Software Radio Summit—February 23, 2009
—Objective Interface Systems, Inc. (OIS), provider of the most widely used communications middleware for software-defined radios (SDRs), today announced that ORBexpress® is the middleware foundation of Harris Corporation's family of Falcon III® SDRs. Having recently announced the shipment of its 50,000th Falcon III AN/PRC-152(C) radio, Harris is the leading provider of software-defined radios in a market which industry research group Venture Development Corp. expects to reach $10B by 2011.

Harris continues to expand and develop its advanced Falcon III radio family, the first Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Software Communications Architecture (SCA)-based radios to be certified for sending and receiving voice and data over U.S. tactical military satellites. Falcon III radios provide unprecedented flexibility in the secure transmission of information to the mobile warfighter.

ORBexpress provides the essential communications foundation required for all SCA-based radios, including the Falcon III family. ORBexpress is the only Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) communications middleware that has successfully passed SCA certification in fielded radios.

“As SCA-certified CORBA middleware, ORBexpress provides an essential communications foundation between SCA CORBA elements implemented across our Falcon III family of radios,” said Mark Turner, Director of Engineering, Harris Corporation.

“Harris Corporation's Falcon III radios are agile, secure and widely deployed,” said Joe Jacob, senior vice president of OIS. “As the only company to achieve JTRS SCA certification for both manpack and handheld radios, Harris has proven itself as an extremely successful player in a very competitive marketplace. We are delighted to see another ORBexpress customer successful in developing high-performance, market-leading products.”

About Harris Corp.'s Falcon III SDRs
The Falcon III radio family offers users a wide range of capabilities such as SINCGARS interoperability, APCO P25, ultra-high frequency (UHF) ground-to-ground line-of-sight communications, close-air support, programmable encryption, and access to secure IP data at on-air rates up to 5 megabits per second. Through the Harris Advanced Wideband Networking Waveform (ANW2) and, in planned future developments, the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW), the Falcon III radios also provide wideband networking. Other capabilities include Havequick II, the Harris High Performance Waveform (HPW), UHF DAMA SATCOM (DAMA tactical satellite—TACSAT) and programmable encryption.

Harris RF Communications is a leading global supplier of secure radio communications products and systems for military, government and commercial organizations. The Falcon family of software-defined tactical radio products and systems include multiband manpack, handheld, vehicular, strategic fixed-site and shipboard configurations. Falcon III is the next generation of radios developed to address the U.S. military's JTRS requirements. For more information, visit www.harris.com.

About ORBexpress
ORBexpress is used wherever systems require an extremely fast, small-footprint communications infrastructure where failure is not an option. The ORBexpress family of products includes: ORBexpress RT, which meets and exceeds the Real-time CORBA standard and implements the CORBA/e profiles; ORBexpress DSP, which enables Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) to become first-class devices in mixed systems; and ORBexpress FPGA, a lightweight hardware implementation of CORBA targeted for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).

Thousands of customers worldwide have used the ORBexpress communications infrastructure to build more flexible, upgradeable and capable products. ORBexpress is used in a wide range of systems, including mission-critical avionics systems, robotics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, nuclear fusion control systems and software defined radios. Available in C++, Java and Ada, ORBexpress has been recognized repeatedly as the smallest and fastest ORB in the industry by a variety of independent benchmark tests.
