ORBexpress Middleware - The Communications Foundation for Thousands of Ultra Electronics High-Capacity SDRs

OIS’s high-performance, small-footprint CORBA ORB designed into industry’s first SCA-based tactical high-capacity radios

HERNDON, VA—March 30, 2009—Objective Interface Systems, Inc. (OIS), provider of the most widely used communications middleware for software-defined radios (SDRs), today announced that ORBexpress® is the middleware foundation for Ultra Electronics-Tactical Communication Systems’ (Ultra-TCS) family of high-capacity SDRs. As provider of the industry’s first high-capacity tactical radios based on the Software Communications Architecture (SCA), Ultra-TCS has received numerous government contracts for its radios.

As SDRs based on the SCA, Ultra-TCS’s family of high-capacity radios support waveform portability, which enables scalability and flexibility across future generations of radios by promoting both code reuse and hardware upgradeability. The Ultra-TCS family of SCA-based high-capacity SDRs features the AN/GRC-245A HCLOS™ radio—which is currently shipping with 16Mb/s capacity and is software-upgradeable to 34Mb/s full-duplex capacity. Ultra-TCS has already delivered thousands of HCLOS™ radios to North American and international customers, many of which are operating in the most demanding battlefield conditions.

“As the industry’s first supplier of high-capacity tactical radios based on the SCA core framework, we are early adopters of a technology that is well-positioned to deliver true waveform portability—a highly desirable functionality for our customers in global military, defense and security organizations,” said Claudio Lucente, vice president, Ultra Electronics-Tactical Communications Systems. “We selected ORBexpress based on its high performance as well as its tight integration with the Communications Research Centre (CRC) Core Framework used in our radios. ORBexpress facilitates seamless communications across heterogeneous platforms—an essential requirement for waveform portability. It delivers this communications infrastructure as promised—without impacting code size or performance.”

“Ultra-TCS has realized tremendous commercial success for its SCA-based high-capacity SDRs, and we are delighted to be a valued supplier to them,” said Joe Jacob, senior vice president, OIS. “Ultra-TCS’s success shows that SCA-based radios can be both high-performance and cost-effective at the same time. It is always a pleasure to see another ORBexpress customer bring to market high-performance, industry-leading products.”
