OIS Announces Telecommunications Middleware Platform with Multiple-Processor Support

SANTA CLARA, CA—Advanced TCA Summit—October 16, 2007 — Objective Interface Systems, Inc. (OIS), provider of the most widely used communications middleware for real-time and embedded systems, today announced the OIS Telecommunications Platform, a standards-based, expandable software communications infrastructure for wireless base stations, routers, switches and network hardware. The OIS Telecommunications Platform features ORBexpress® RT, ORBexpress DSP and ORBexpress FPGA, OIS’s high-performance communications middleware products. This platform supports a wide variety of hardware architectures in telecommunications systems: general purpose processors (GPPs), digital signal processors (DSPs) and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This multiple-processor support lets telecommunications systems designers develop code once on a common platform and then easily deploy it to specific multi-processor hardware on an as-needed basis.

Based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), the OIS Telecommunications Platform allows systems designers to optimize overall throughput of their system without rewriting their communications protocols every time they move features between processors. This preserves the company’s investment in software and gets products to market faster.

The world’s first high-assurance communications security software, PCSexpress™, is available as part of the OIS Telecommunications Platform. PCSexpress provides military-grade security for top secret information at a COTS price. Once implemented in a base station, for example, PCSexpress ensures the integrity of information flows throughout the network, while providing the highest level of protection to confidential data. PCSexpress secures the system against hackers, protecting data throughout the network.

“Designers of next-generation telecommunications systems face numerous challenges. To meet customer demand for emerging high-bandwidth audio and video applications, they must build intelligent high-performance systems that support massive amounts of data,” said Joe Jacob, senior vice president of Objective Interface Systems, Inc. “Designers need a way to process all this data in the most efficient manner, which is why they are turning to multiple-processor systems including GPPs, DSPs and FPGAs. By uniformly supporting all these processor types, the OIS Telecommunications Platform promotes code reuse, allowing designers to roll out multiple product generations based on the same application code. This preserves their investment in software.”

Robert Applebaum, President, Silicon Turnkey Express, commented on the industry pressures affecting telecommunications and network equipment providers:

“Telecom and network equipment providers are continually challenged to get to market faster, while reducing development costs,” said Mr. Applebaum. “Standards-based solutions that will ensure interoperability and leverage best-of-breed components from industry-leading companies alleviate these market and cost pressures. Solutions like OIS’ Telecommunications Platform allow designers to get their applications up and running quickly and upgrade hardware with minimal effort.”

The OIS Telecommunications Platform Features:

  • Trio of standards-based CORBA object request brokers (ORBs) which provides a flexible, upgradeable and high-performance communications infrastructure for telecom and network equipment—in a very small footprint;
  • Support for partial reconfigurability on the FPGA, which simplifies programming while significantly increasing application code reuse; this is critical in sophisticated systems such as base stations which are upgraded in the field;
  • Support for high-security communications through PCSexpress, the only commercially available communications middleware product designed for the highest levels of security, including High Robustness;
  • Support for multiple pluggable transports with Quality of Service (QoS), such as Ethernet and RDMA technologies (eg. RapidIO™ and INFINIBAND), takes care of communications on the boards and the backplane—without requiring any rewriting of transport protocols.
