Objective Interface Middleware Solution selected by CRC

HERNDON, VA - February 17, 2005 - With radio often providing the only means of communication in a high-risk environment, such as a military engagement or humanitarian rescue operation, ensuring interoperability among different types of field-based radios or communications systems is mission-critical. Recognizing the need for interoperability between radios based on different hardware platforms or operating at different frequencies, Communications Research Centre (CRC), Canada 's leading research and development (R&D) laboratory for advanced telecommunications, has chosen Objective Interface's high-performance middleware solution, ORBexpress™, to create a commercially available software-defined radio (SDR) platform that enables interoperability through software modifications, not hardware changes.

“This partnership is an important step in providing greater flexibility of choice to the industry,” said Claude Bélisle, Research Manager, Advanced Radio Systems, Communications Research Centre. “By incorporating Objective Interface's ORBexpress with CRC's Software Communications Architecture (SCA) implementation, we have been able to further expand our product offerings to the world of embedded systems.”

“CRC's selection of ORBexpress for its new software communications architecture validates the ways in which ease-of-use, ultra-fast performance and low overhead are combined in our ORB-based middleware solutions,” stated Bill Beckwith, CEO, Objective Interface Systems, Inc. “We are pleased to be part of a solution that facilitates the development of the software-defined radio through a commercially available, off-the-shelf software package. We look forward to supporting CRC as they fulfill the demands for this package among their military and commercial customers.”

CRC's SCARI Software Suite and the SCA
CRC's SCARI Software Suite provides a complete software solution for implementing SDR. It is based on the Software Communications Architecture (SCA), a foundational technology that uses real-time CORBA as the framework that enables wireless communications equipment to dynamically learn new communications waveforms. The SCARI Software Suite is based on version 3.0 of the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) specifications published by the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS).

About the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC)
CRC is the Canadian government's primary laboratory for R&D in advanced telecommunications. R&D is used for public policy purposes and to strengthen the Canadian economy through technology and knowledge transfer. Under its four research branches (Terrestrial Wireless, Satellite Communications and Radio Propagation Research, Broadband Network Technologies and Broadcast Technology), CRC specializes in taking an interdisciplinary approach to longer-term R&D in wireless systems, radio fundamentals, communication networks, photonics and interactive multimedia.
