Objective Interface, Developer of World's Smallest, Fastest ORB, Announces CORBA/e

HERNDON,VA - February 22, 2006 - Objective Interface Systems, Inc., the global leader in high-performance, real-time and embedded communications middleware, today announced that ORBexpress® RT, the world's most popular high-performance ORB, now supports the Object Management Group's (OMG) CORBA/e standard. In the final stages of approval by the OMG, CORBA/e is a new Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard that is optimized for embedded systems. The CORBA/e standard provides for small, fast implementations of CORBA that are designed specifically for high-performance, real-time and resource-constrained embedded applications.

Serving as the editor of the CORBA/e specification, Objective Interface brings more than a decade of experience in providing real-time, high-performance and embedded communications middleware to thousands of customers worldwide.

“CORBA/e is the result of industry collaboration between vendors and users. Objective Interface has been instrumental in driving the adoption of CORBA/e,” said Dr. Richard Soley, OMG Chairman and CEO. “Additionally, Objective Interface has played another important role in the evolution of CORBA. Its ORBexpress communications middleware—which has been designed into performance-critical applications—is one of the validations of CORBA as a high-performance open architecture for embedded and real-time systems.”

ORBexpress RT has been evaluated and results are available from a variety of independent benchmark tests, including those conducted by Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Laboratories.

“During our extensive performance testing of CORBA ORBs and during our evaluations of other forms of communications middleware, we concluded that CORBA can be very small, extremely fast and fully optimized for the industry's highest-performance applications,” said Gautam Thaker, Technical Lead, who benchmarks communications middleware for the Distributed Processing Lab at the Advanced Technology Laboratories.

Industry Support for ORBexpress RT
“ORBexpress RT validates that real-time CORBA can perform with tremendous speed and extremely low latency, particularly when coupled with the fast message passing and context switching behavior of our INTEGRITY Real-Time Operating System,” stated Dave Kleidermacher, vice president of engineering, Green Hills Software.

“Over the years, we have worked with Objective Interface to meet the needs of mission-critical mil/aero and telecommunications systems integrators,” said Rob Hoffman, senior director, aerospace and defense, Wind River Systems. “In our experience, ORBexpress RT has been able to meet even the most stringent requirements of real-time, embedded and high-performance systems based on our real-time operating environment, VxWorks.”

“Our experience with real-time CORBA, and specifically with ORBexpress RT from Objective Interface, has shown that CORBA can be used to build small footprint, real-time and high-performance embedded systems in telecommunications, industrial control, aerospace and defense and other application areas,” said Steve Blackman, director of business development, military and aerospace, LynuxWorks. “We have found that ORBexpress RT complements our LynxOS real-time operating system, which provides uncompromising performance for ultra-reliable, high-performance systems.

The Evolution of CORBA:
From Enterprise Servers to Embedded Systems
CORBA was originally conceived to allow applications interoperability on heterogeneous systems, such as back-office enterprise systems running UNIX and desktop Windows systems. Initial versions of CORBA were focused on features and were not optimized for size and performance. In recent years, however, the emergence of real-time and embedded CORBA was driven by user demand, especially in the telecommunications and defense industries, where users were interested in the advantages of CORBA for embedded systems. The CORBA/e specification is the result of a collaborative effort among OMG members focusing on real-time and embedded systems.

There are two profiles of CORBA/e. CORBA/e Compact Profile is a proven, high-performance architecture designed from the ground up for mission-critical and high-performance embedded applications, including image and signal processing systems. CORBA/e Micro Profile is ideal for resource-constrained applications such as mobile devices based on low-power processors or high-end digital signal processors (DSPs).

As with standard CORBA, CORBA/e provides the benefit of code reuse. Developers do not need to re-write code for all systems on a network when they want to make changes, thus preserving their investment in existing applications. About ORBexpress RT
ORBexpress RT is based on the Real-time Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard that enables real-time and embedded devices in heterogeneous environments to communicate seamlessly. Thousands of customers worldwide have used the ORBexpress communications infrastructure to build more flexible, upgradeable and capable products. Available in C++, Ada and Java, ORBexpress has been recognized repeatedly as the fastest ORB in the industry, such as in an independent study conducted by Boeing's Phantomworks Group.

“The OMG's CORBA/e specification is designed for the world's most demanding applications in mission-critical environments. It is ideally suited for military/aerospace, communications systems such as Software Defined Radio, banking/finance, robotics and industrial control,” said Bill Beckwith, CEO/CTO, Objective Interface Systems. “Objective Interface's ORBexpress RT fulfills even the most rigorous requirements for high-performance and real-time communications middleware in these environments.”
