Overview of CORBA

After completion of this class, the participant is expected to:

  1. Understand the basics of CORBA and distributed object computing
  2. Understand how CORBA can be used within industry applications
  3. Provide information and materials communicating CORBA technology to colleagues

Audience Description
This course is targeted for managers, team leaders or anyone interested in understanding the basics of CORBA. The course, technical in nature, will help provide a basic understanding of a CORBA implementation and the underlying technical components of client, host, and transports used within an implementation.

Course Goals
This course will enable students to:

  • Understand the goals and rationale behind CORBA
  • Possess a working knowledge of the software development process and CORBA uses and applications
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of CORBA and other Distributed Object Computing alternatives

Description
This course provides students with an overview of basic CORBA technology. The concepts of distributed object-oriented programming will be presented. The role of a language-neutral Interface Definition Language will be illustrated. An example (including the generated code) will be shown. The course is lecture only - no programming exercises will be given.

Prerequisites
No knowledge of CORBA or Distributed Object Computing is needed or assumed. Familiarity with programming and the software development life-cycle will be helpful in maximizing the benefits to the student.

Duration
One half (½) day.

Number of Students
This course is limited only by the available seating capacity. However, as the class size increases, the amount of student interaction and the instructor's ability to provided detailed answers to questions will decrease.

Materials
Students will be provided with a copy of the instructor's slides.

Course is taught at the customer's site.
